Audi is the first automotive manufacturer to attain a DMV permit from California to test self-driving cars on public roads. One of Audi’s current projects is the human-machine interface on the autonomous car, attaining the California permit is a huge milestone for Audi because the Audi Electronics Research Lab is also located in California.
“Audi is a driving force behind the research taking automated driving from science fiction to pre-production readiness,” said Scott Keogh, President of Audi of America. In 2012 Audi procured an autonomous driving plate in Nevada where Audi was the first automotive manufacture to drive an autonomous car on a Florida freeway. With the California permit Audi will now be able to continue its research and if all goes according to plain, Audi’s autonomous car will be ready for everyday freeway use in the next five years.
